Italian shoes & leather businesses promoted in Vietnam
Under the auspices of the Italy’s Ministry of Economic Development, the Italian Trade Agency (ITA), and the National Association of Italian Manufacturers of Footwear, Leather Goods and Tanning Technologies (ASSOMAC) organized the Italian Pavilion Layout at the “Shoes & Leather Vietnam 2019” Exhibition in Ho Chi Minh city, from July 10 to 12.
At the exhibition, 20 Italian enterprises officially join the Italian Pavilion Layout and 12 others attend the event as independent enterprises or through local partners – which are experienced designers and companies in manufacturing and supplying machinery, equipment and technologies for the production of footwear, leather goods and tanning such as measuring machines, pressing machines, cutting machines, pulling over lasting machines, finishing machines, integrated lines and chemicals for leather and footwear production – have displayed and introduced breakthrough and creative products using the most advanced technologies.

Mr. Paolo Lemma, Italian Trade Commissioner, said most of the companies participating in this exhibition have had suppliers, agents or representative offices in Vietnam. In addition, they are looking forward to more opportunities in this developing market, fostering the cooperation relationship with Vietnamese enterprises, and looking for new partners.

“Over the past five years, the export turnover of the Italian leather and footwear sector accounted for 75% of the total revenue, increasing from 318 million euros in 2013 to 412 million euros in 2018 (up 29.6%). The figures indicate that “Made in Italy” products of excellence have been recognized globally, especially in the footwear, leather goods and tanning industry. In Vietnam, the results were better and better in the 2013-2018 period. The export value of Italy increased 10 times, from 3.4 million euros in 2013 to 31.7 million euros in 2018 (up 6% against 2017). Italy is the second largest supplier for Vietnam with 19% market share, behind China (56.5%) but over South Korea (15%),” said Mr. Lemma.

Leading the Italian business mission to this exhibition is ASSOMAC. Ms. Gabriella Marchioni Bocca, President of ASSOMAC, said: “Vietnam has become the third largest shoes maker and the second largest shoes exporter in the world. Such an unexpected success is attributed to the huge domestic and foreign investment in this field, as well as the effort of the Vietnamese leather and footwear businesses. In the past couple of years, the presence of Italian enterprises with their exclusive capabilities has supported the outstanding development of the Vietnamese leather and footwear industry.

The milestone of the cooperation is the establishment of the Italy-Vietnam Footwear Technology Center in Binh Duong Province, which is the result of the cooperation program among the Italian Trade Agency, the ASSOMAC and the Vietnam Leather, Footwear and Handbag Association (LEFASO). Recently, the relationship between ASSOMAC and research institutes of Vietnam has been intensified through the signing of a cooperation agreement with Leather and Shoes Research Institute (LSI) in Hanoi.”
